Business is the main economic activity in this photograph. The cyclist at the foreground could have dropped a customer to buy some vegetables or clothes in this open air market. The wooden foot bypasses from the road to the market provide a link to the stalls and shops at the background, though safety seems to be compromised since people crossing from either side can fall into the open drainage! Seemingly space is precious and every inch seems to count!! Eventually the residential areas get squeezed and overcrowded, having a negative impact on the way they live.

Space is truly precious. The demarcation between residential and commercial areas is getting blurred and I agree this has a negative impact (though initially it is nice to be able to pop out and do your shopping next door). The solution ... not sure, but zoning should be adhered to.
